LEARN AT YOUR OWN PACE
Expand your relationship to materials. Rethink how you develop ideas. Make work that is unmistakably yours.
It’s more than a class - it’s a turning point.
- Brenda F.
The transformation for me was changing my thinking to see my vessels as a blank canvas to add to. I now view my coiled vessels as a 3-dimensional way to express and describe what I see.
Lissa’s course was a turning point for me. It completely shifted how I think about combining materials, techniques, and ideas. Suddenly, everything feels possible.
This course is more than an exploration of technique - it invites a deeper engagement with your practice. Under Lissa’s guidance, you can develop an intuitive relationship with process…
The course changed the way I create art. I learned it is better to find my artistic voice than to search for it. It helped me slow down, focus my practice, and truly understand my materials.
Connecting is a gentle but powerful framework for growth. It allows you to build a body of work that is both meaningful and technically rich. It’s more than a class – it’s a turning point in how you see yourself as an artist.
You don’t need a grand idea to make meaningful work.
One of the biggest pressures artists place on themselves is the belief that they need something profound to say before they begin. Lissa challenges that assumption.
In Connecting, you begin with a material, a technique or an idea – and allow the work to unfold from there.
Through making, ideas develop. One decision leads to the next. Through repetition, a body of work begins to form.
With the guidance of Lissa Hunter, you’ll start with coiling as your foundation, then build surface design; layering, wrapping and stitching – until the coiling itself becomes your canvas. The vessel is no longer just a form but a surface to explore and develop.
Using contemporary basketry techniques and mixed-media processes you’ll:
Create sculptural objects, vessels and forms that move beyond traditional basketry into contemporary fibre art.
Learn to find your ideas intuitively and take them from sketchbook to sculputral form, to a body of work
See how composition, material, and surface connect - so your forms feel resolved.
Transform research and material sampling into decisive, confident making.
Develop a repatable framework for connecting concept and creation no matter the medium.
Be part of a global community and see your work exhibited online.
With 50 years of experience, Lissa Hunter doesn’t just teach technique - she changes the way you think about making.
You’ll reimagine what you already know and develop a framework that supports you to think and create like an artist - long after the course ends.
Lissa Hunter is an American artist and educator internationally recognised for her sculptural fibre works and mixed media installations.
For more than five decades, her practice has explored the relationship between idea, material, and process - weaving basketry, drawing, and mixed media into a deeply integrated body of work.
But what makes Lissa’s teaching different is not just her experience. It’s her attention to the moment when thinking becomes making.
She is interested in what happens when the hand knows something the mind doesn’t yet. When curiosity leads. When material begins to answer back.
Her work is held in major museum collections, and her teaching has influenced generations of artists seeking authenticity and depth in their creative voice. Lissa is a lifetime trustee of Haystack Mountain School of Craft.
Through Connecting, Lissa invites you into her studio - not just to learn techniques, but to experience how thinking and making become one.
I’m interested in the moment when thinking becomes making - when the hand knows something the mind doesn’t yet.

The best course I have taken so far with Take Two! This will take your art making experiences to a whole new level.
Learning from Lissa was a rare privilege. Her openness and experience changed the way I think about materials and my own artistic voice. I’m leaving with new techniques, renewed confidence, and a richer process for developing my ideas.
Deeply impactful, thoughtful and professional. Lissa is the bees knees of experience, technical knowledge, focus and process, yet brings a calmness and softness to her teaching through her creativity. Extremely rewarding and enjoyable.
Lissa’s comments beyond technique are what will stick with me. There is the idea, material, and method. All are important and one will lead the others.
You’ll take away skills, inspiration, and a greater respect for your art practice. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity.
I am 92 years old now… being able to participate in this online course has transformed me from feeling at the end to beginning again. It’s never too late.

Module 1 - The Foundations of Making
As your essential first step, you’ll explore the connection between ideas, materials, and technique through guided, hands-on exploration. You'll build a simple system to capture your thoughts while discovering the sculptural potential of coiling and fibre art.
Here, you’ll learn to:
- Capture and organise ideas through sketchbooks, notes, and visual documentation.
- Coil with raffia and diverse materials to explore texture, shape, and structure.
- Design vessel forms while considering the relationship between interior and exterior surfaces.
-
Module 2 - Finding as a Process
This module introduces unconventional materials and simple, versatile techniques into your practice. You’ll explore how everyday sources of inspiration and tactile processes can expand your artistic vocabulary while helping you stay connected to your own creative vision.
You’ll develop the confidence to:
- Work with alternative materials using looping, stitching, pinning, and wrapping techniques.
- Use books and found sources as inspiration for form, texture, and idea development.
- Build a personal artistic vocabulary through experimentation and material discovery.

In this module, materials become active partners in your creative process. You’ll explore how everyday items can be reimagined for artistic expression, learning to recognise their qualities and potential through hands-on experimentation.
You’ll:
- Repurpose found materials such as plastic, wire, mesh, and metal through cutting, wrapping, painting, and coiling.
- Evaluate material qualities like flexibility, strength, and texture to inform your making.
- Reflect on discovery, invention, and creativity to develop a more personal artistic voice.
-
Module 4 - Transforming Materials

You’ll explore how to:
- Experiment with surface design through layering, texture, and embellishment.
- Use paper and contrasting materials to create depth and visual interest.
- Adopt a “What if?” approach to expand your artistic voice and creative possibilities.
-
Module 5 - Ideas Lead the Way
This module explores how ideas emerge, evolve, and take shape within your creative practice. You’ll learn to recognise where ideas come from and how to develop them through reflection, experimentation, and process-led exploration.
You will learn to:
- Cultivate and commit to ideas, whether they arrive from certainty, risk, or quiet curiosity.
- Understand your artistic practice as an evolving, reflective process.
- Build trust in your creative voice through ongoing exploration and refinement.
-

- Recognise patterns, rhythm, and structure in what inspires you.
- Refine composition and strengthen your vision through thoughtful visual planning.

You’ll
- Understand how to develop a series using a guiding idea to create coherence.
- Analyse exhibitions and artworks as case studies for building a body of work.
- Gain confidence in creating pieces that feel connected, intentional, and distinctly yours.

Your voice matters. It’s what you do with it that counts.
I look forward to the connection between head and hand, art and craft, ideas and materials - you and me, all of us together.

Is this a traditional basketry course?
No.
Coiling is one of the techniques explored, but Connecting is not a step-by-step basket-making course.
This course focuses on how ideas, materials and form connect — and how you can move beyond traditional structures into sculptural, mixed-media work.
If you’re looking for quick projects to replicate, this may not be the right fit.
If you’re ready to deepen your thinking and expand your practice, you’re in the right place. -
How is this different from other fibre or weaving courses?
This course is philosophy-led and process-driven.
Rather than mastering one specific weaving method, you’ll explore how materials relate, how objects hold meaning, and how your thinking shapes your work.
If you’ve previously studied fibre techniques, this course will deepen your approach — not repeat foundations. -
Do I have to attend at a specific time?
No.
The course content is self-paced and available for life. You can watch, pause, revisit and return whenever it suits you.
Live tutor engagement runs for eight weeks (27 February – 24 April 2026), but there is no requirement to “keep up.”
You can move at a pace that fits your life. -
How will I interact with the tutor?
