Understand form. Transform materials. Gain the freedom to create what you imagine.
Learn Tina's process. Discover your own possibilities.
Techniques give you the freedom to make what you imagine.
Process gives you the framework to develop an idea into work that is unmistakably your own.
In Soft Revolution, Tina Marais gives you both.
She opens up her studio practice and shares not only how she constructs her work, but how she finds ideas, responds to materials, solves problems and develops meaning through form.
You’ll see the decisions behind the finished work - and learn how to take those ways of working into a practice that is entirely your own.
There's a way of peeling back the fabric to reveal what’s underneath – it’s a metaphorical, poetic way of working – depending on what you want to express through your artwork.
– TINA MARAIS
Build the skills to take your ideas further.
See materials differently. A worn shirt, your mother's tablecloth, a saved scrap or a found object can become more than material; it can become the starting point for form, memory and meaning.
Build a richer language of surface. Explore gathering, smocking, appliqué, binding, wrapping and assemblage, then combine and adapt them to create texture that becomes part of the story.
Think in three dimensions. Begin to understand how cloth behaves in space, how soft and hard materials can work together, and how textile can become sculptural form.
Turn an idea into form. Learn Tina's intuitive approach to pattern drafting and move from sketch to three-dimensional structure, without relying on complicated measuring or maths.
Let process lead somewhere unexpected. Experiment, respond to your materials and allow an idea to evolve rather than forcing a predetermined outcome, developing work that feels increasingly your own.
Make work you're ready to put into the world. Develop your work alongside an international community of artists, with the opportunity to present it in a curated online exhibition.

Tina Marais is an internationally exhibited fibre artist whose work transforms cloth and everyday objects into sculptural forms rich with memory and meaning.
Her understanding of form began in costume design, learning how flat fabric could be shaped around the body. Later, after immigrating to Quebec, textiles became a way to connect with people and place.
Tina calls her way of gathering materials “social archaeology” looking beyond what something is to consider where it has been, the stories it carries, and what it might become next.
In Soft Revolution, Tina generously opens up her process, sharing not only how she makes, but how she thinks, experiments and finds possibility in the materials around her.
This is a place to inspire, not paint by numbers. I teach from a perspective where understanding a technique or method is more important than perfectly executing it, allowing each student the freedom to adapt to their own rhythm and process.

-
Module one – Visual communication and material translation
You'll begin by looking at materials differently – exploring how the things around you can carry memory, emotion and personal meaning, and how these qualities can become part of your sculptural language.
In this module, you'll:
- Gather materials and objects that hold visual, emotional or personal significance, and begin building your own material vocabulary.
- Experiment with simple assemblage – folding, layering, arranging and connecting materials to discover how they interact through touch and form.
- Learn foundational hand-stitching techniques and use mind mapping to begin connecting materials, memories and ideas with greater intention.
-
Module two – Surface texture: connecting with nature
Taking inspiration from textures and forms found in nature, you’ll explore how folding, gathering, binding and repetition can transform flat cloth into richly textured sculptural forms.
Along the way, you'll:
- Learn a range of sculptural surface techniques, including organic gathered hand stitch, folding fabric over curved forms, wrapped rope binding, petal ribbons and machine-stitched pleating.
- Discover how fabric grain, stitch, tension and repetition can be used to create movement, volume and structure.
- Build a library of textural samplers, then combine and develop your techniques into your own resolved textile sculptures.
-
Module three – Surface texture: grids, stitches, and rhythm
Drawing on architectural lines and grid structure, you'll learn Canadian smocking and folding techniques that bring rhythm and dimension to your work.
Through this module, you'll:- Practice Canadian smocking and advanced folding techniques.
- Create sculptural surfaces with real dimension and strength.
- Connect architectural structure to your own textile decisions.
-
Module four – Layering through appliqué
Inspired by urban texture and layered surfaces, you'll explore appliqué and reverse appliqué to create work with real visual history.
You'll explore how to:
- Use appliqué and reverse appliqué as sculptural techniques.
- Treat layering as both design and metaphor.
- Create samples that carry the energy of the world around you.
-
Module five – Binding and material relationships
You'll bind and weave everyday objects – buttons, doorknobs, found fragments – into your work, discovering how repetition turns the ordinary into something else entirely.
Across this module, you'll:- Develop assemblage skills using found objects.
- Understand how repeated objects create presence and narrative.
- See overlooked materials as genuine creative material.
-
Module six – Organic pattern drafting
Tina teaches her own freehand pattern-drafting method – deconstructing a form into pieces you can actually cut and sew into a sculptural base.
In this module, you'll:
- Learn a repeatable method for shaping simple sculptural bases, by eye.
- Understand how different fabrics behave once they're pattern-drafted.
- Create a real foundation for sculptural work, without needing to measure.
-
Module seven – Sculptural forms: advanced pattern editing
You'll take the pattern-drafting method further – darts, multi-panel forms, more complex shapes.
Along the way, you'll:
- Design and construct multi-panel sculptural forms.
- Use darts and inserts to add real volume.
- Shape cloth with more control and more intention.
-
Module eight – Connecting sculptural structures
You'll build armatures from wood, cardboard, or found objects, and learn to upholster them with fabric, providing you the structure to work at a larger scale.
Through this module, you'll:
- Combine textile work with a built armature for real structure.
- Practice upholstering an unconventional base.
- Create larger, bolder sculptural work with confidence.
-
Module nine – Surface texture: finishing touches
You'll refine and complete your pieces – distressing, beadwork, embroidery, painting – and learn to recognise when a piece is genuinely finished.
You'll explore how to:
- Develop a toolkit of finishing techniques.
- Recognise the point where a piece is complete, not overworked.
- Bring a piece to exhibition-ready standard.
-
Module ten – Installation considerations
Tina shares what she's learned from her own international exhibitions, and you'll learn to present your work – wall-mounted, suspended, or installed.
Across this module, you'll:
- Present sculptural work with real professional confidence.
- Understand how installation itself shapes meaning.
- Approach exhibition and presentation opportunities with greater confidence.
-

Course-specific FAQs
-
What is textile sculpture?
Textile sculpture moves cloth, thread and fibre beyond the flat plane into three dimensions. It can hang, stand, suspend or occupy space in many different ways.
-
I already know how to work with texture and surface – will this course take me further?
Soft Revolution isn't just about texture skills, it also teaches you a construction method – taking a shape from a flat sketch through to a standalone sculptural form. If your work has so far been flat or wall-based, this is the course that changes that.
Here’s what Vicki D said about doing Tina’s course: “After nearly 30 years in the fashion industry, I gained strong skills in design, patternmaking, construction and production. Today, everything has shifted, I feel like I’ve finally found the creative voice I’ve been searching for. Pandora’s box has opened, and this genie isn’t going back in the bottle!” -
I work in a different medium (quilting, embroidery, weaving) – will this still apply to what I do?
Absolutely – the pattern-drafting method teaches you how you translate any shape from 2D into 3D. Several students have come from quilting (like Joan W. below) and embroidery backgrounds, learning ways to expand their practice.
In her course feedback, Joan W. said: “With a background in quilting, my work has always incorporated surface texture, but I now understand how to create texture that lifts off the surface, opening up many new possibilities for my future work.” -
Do I need a sewing machine?
A sewing machine is helpful and will make some of the techniques taught in the course faster if you do have one, but it’s by no means a necessity. Plus, many of the techniques taught during the course can only be done by hand.
-
Is this course going to feel too precise or technical for me?
No – Tina's method is intentionally freehand. She teaches you to understand a shape vs. measuring it exactly, and has spoken directly about how discouraging overly strict, "perfect seams" teaching can be. This course encourages a more freehand style.
-
How is this different from other courses that work with personal or collected materials?
Soft Revolution is about creating intentional fibre sculptures that draw on the personal and collected materials you already have around you. Tina's pattern-drafting method takes a flat sketch all the way through to a 3D form you can walk around, not a collage or a memory box. It’s the only course of its kind in the Take Two catalogue.
-
How do you make a soft 3D textile sculpture?
Start by sketching a form, then break it down into segments in order to draft a pattern, cut the pieces, and assemble them into a three-dimensional form – the exact method taught step-by-step in this course.
-
What's the difference between fibre art and fibre sculpture?
Fibre art is a broad term covering any material or technique based in thread, cloth, or fibre. Fibre sculpture specifically means fibre based work built into a three-dimensional form.

There is no fixed schedule, no live sessions you have to show up for. But there are two live Q&A sessions during your tutor’s live interaction period – on 12 November, 8pm CET and 26 November, 8pm CET – both of which will be available for replay.
The course was built for people with full lives – you watch when you want, pause when you need to, and return to a module three times if that's what it takes.
As Wendy put it: "The freedom to take your time and disappear down your own rabbit hole is such a joy." -
How does interacting with your tutor actually work?
Between 16 October - 11 December, Tina is available in the private student community group on Facebook. This isn't a cursory presence – students consistently describe her feedback as detailed, personal, and genuinely engaged with their individual work.
There are also two live Q&A sessions where you can submit questions in advance:
Live Q&A #1: 12 November 2026
Live Q&A #2: 26 November 2026
These are streamed via YouTube and later uploaded into the course portal so you can watch even if you can't join live.
After 11 December your tutor steps back from the group – but the community stays open, and you have all the course content for life. -

For technical questions, or if you'd prefer not to use the Facebook group, email support@taketwoart.com directly.
-
Can I take this course on my phone or tablet?
Absolutely. The course is fully responsive and works across laptop, tablet, and phone. Switch between devices freely – all you need is an internet connection.
A note from Tina
In this course I invite you to go where you feel fragile and vulnerable – speak about the things you don't usually want to speak about in your work. And then go bigger, smaller, or bolder than you feel comfortable with.
That's maybe where you’ll find a new community, new support, and start creating work that you never before imagined.
